Lhires III Micrometer Settings

The Lhires III spectrograph micrometer was adjusted in increments of 0.50 while taking spectrum images of the gas tube.

There is about 50% overlap of the images when using micrometer increments of 0.50 and using the Sony NEX-6 camera.

If there is an emission line in the center of the image then in the previous smaller micrometer setting it will be in the right side of the image and the following larger micrometer setting it will be in the left side of the image.

The short wavelengths are on the left side of the spectrum image and the longer wavelengths are on the right side of the spectrum image.

Micrometer setting 13.0 is the shortest wavelength, larger micrometer settings are the longer wavelengths.

The Sony NEX-6 camera sensitivity decreases in the blue short wavelengths and in the red long wavelengths.

The below images are vertically cropped and they are resized 25% of the full size image.

  • Spectrum span estimate ~423 Angstroms, ~3936 to ~4359 Angstroms
  • Faint Hydrogen delta 4101.74 Angstroms emission line in the Balmer series at the center-left of the spectrum.
  • Hydrogen gamma 4340.462 Angstroms emission line in the Balmer series at the right edge of the spectrum.
  • Sony NEX-6 camera blue sensitivity cutoff limits the spectrum in the blue short wavelengths and as a result the hydrogen 3970.072 Angstroms emission line is not seen in this spectrum as expected.
